Motion for a Resolution on the negotiations on the UN Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) (2012/2636(RSP))
Resolution B7-0276/2012
Pino Arlacchi (S&D ), in writing . − Dear Mr. President, I support this report because, although some really good amendments presented by my group had not been approved, it is important that the Parliament takes a clear position on this fundamental issue. Indeed a united, coherent and consistent EU approach is crucial for such a treaty to be adopted and effectively implemented at global level. The Arms Trade Treaty that will be negotiated in 2012 must include clear and binding provisions consistent with the highest international standards. Uncontrolled arms trading pose a serious threat to peace and stability but also to democracy, the rule of law and sustainable social-economic development. The EU Member States consistently account for approximately 30 % of all exports and are among the world’s leading arms producers and exporters. For these reasons the EU has both the responsibility and the interest in contributing to control arms trade at global level.
