Moscow February 11 (Itar-Tass) —— The Federal Drug Control Service is working out a joint Russian-European plan for five years to combat Afghan drug production, a service source told Itar-Tass on Friday.

"On February 14 Viktor Ivanov, Director of the Federal Drug Control Service, will hold a meeting of the Interdepartmental working group on Afghanistan, which will focus on the work on a joint Russian-European action plan for the next five years to fight Afghan drug production," the source said.

The enormous-scope Afghan drug production is a fundamental factor in forming the drug situation in Russia and the countries of the European Union. According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, Afghanistan is the world leader in production of not only heroin, but also hashish, annually supplying up to 3,500 tonnes of the drug produced from hemp.

European Parliament member Pino Arlacchi, who works on a new EU strategy for Afghanistan, is also invited to the meeting of the interdepartmental working group on Afghanistan of the National Anti-Drug Committee.
