Negotiations of the EU-Moldova Association Agreement

E-mail Print PDF

Thursday, 15 September 2011 - Strasbourg

Explanations of vote:

Report: Graham Watson (A7-0289/2011 )

Pino Arlacchi (S&D ), in writing . − I voted for this report because it is important to sustain the positive evolution of political and economic relations between the EU and the Republic of Moldova. The future association agreement will deepen the political relationship and economic integration of the Republic of Moldova and the EU. Its principal objective is to draw Moldova closer to the EU, enhancing political cooperation and reinforcing joint measures in migration, asylum, border management, drugs and crime. In deepening its relations with the Republic of Moldova, the EU should also promote stability and confidence-building, including by contributing proactively to finding a viable solution to the Transnistrian conflict, which is a source of regional instability.

Join motion for a resolution on the situation in Syria

E-mail Print PDF

Thursday, 15 September 2011 - Strasbourg

Explanations of vote:

Motions for resolutions: RC B7-0482/2011

Pino Arlacchi (S&D ), in writing . − I voted for this Resolution because it has never been more important than now to take a clear position against what is happening in Syria. Since March 2011, more than 2 200 civilians have been killed and many others arrested in the deliberate brutal repression of peaceful protestors by the Syrian regime. President Bashar al-Assad must now step aside in order to open the way to fulfiling the legitimate democratic aspirations of the Syrian people. The EU is unified in asking for an immediate end to violent crackdowns against peaceful demonstrators. All international humanitarian organisations, as well as international media, must have full access to the country.

Motion for a resolution on the EU’s efforts to combat corruption

E-mail Print PDF

Thursday, 15 September 2011 - Strasbourg

Explanation of vote:

Motion for resolution: B7-0481/2011

Pino Arlacchi (S&D ), in writing . − I strongly support this joint Resolution because the fight against corruption must be one of our absolute priorities. Unfortunately, there is a lack of real political commitment from leaders and decision-makers to combat corruption in all its forms. As we all know, corruption has kept many dictatorial regimes in power and allowed them to channel significant amounts of money to foreign bank accounts, including European ones. Member States must step up their efforts to trace and freeze foreign stolen assets so they can be returned to their rightful owners.

Join motion for a resolution on famine in East Africa

E-mail Print PDF

Thursday, 15 September 2011 - Strasbourg

Explanation of vote:

Motions for resolutions: RC B7-0490/2011

Pino Arlacchi (S&D ), in writing . − I voted for this Resolution because it condemns the late mobilisation of the international community. The first drought alerts in the region were given in December 2010, and earlier action could have helped abate the current catastrophe. Tens of thousands of people have already died, 750 000 are imminently at risk of starvation and 12 million people across Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya and Djibouti are in urgent need of food aid. In this text, we ask for an increased mobilisation of EU aid to assist the worst affected areas and the most vulnerable population groups.

Situation in Syria

Wednesday, 14 September 2011 - Strasbourg

Debate

Pino Arlacchi (S&D ). - Madam President, I am happy to see that the whole Parliament has a clear and strong position on the tragedy that is unfolding in Syria.

The S&D Group has just tabled a joint motion for a resolution which reflects the deep concern of Europe, the Arab world and the rest of the planet over the continued brutal crackdown on peaceful protesters perpetrated by the al-Assad regime. The figure of 2 600 has been quoted as the number of people whose lives have been destroyed by the brutality of the regime, but many more have been injured, tortured or detained.

Motion for a resolution on an EU Homelessness Strategy

E-mail Print PDF

Wednesday, 14 September 2011 - Strasbourg

Explanations of vote

Pino Arlacchi (S&D ), in writing . − I voted in favour of this Resolution because I value its aim to find a solution for one of the most extreme forms of poverty and deprivation. Homelessness has increased in recent years in several EU Member States and is an unacceptable violation of human dignity. I believe that it is essential to involve all stakeholders, including national, regional and local policy-makers, in the fight against homelessness.

Bericht: Judith Sargentini (A7-0245/2011 )

Explanations of vote:

Pino Arlacchi (S&D ), in writing . − I voted in favour of this Resolution because I am convinced that transparency is the best way to prevent corruption, fraud, conflicts of interest and mismanagement. For this reason, the EU must provide a model of institutional transparency and modern democracy for the Member States as well as for third countries.

On the proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council amending Council Regulation (EC) No 2007/2004 establishing FRONTEX

E-mail Print PDF

Report: Simon Busuttil A7-0278/2011

on the proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council amending Council Regulation (EC) No 2007/2004 establishing a European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders of the Member States of the European Union (FRONTEX)

Tuesday, 13 September 2011 - Strasbourg

Explanations of vote:

Pino Arlacchi (S&D ), in writing . − I strongly support this report as Europe can no longer look powerless in emergency situations because it is unable to muster resources or pool assets. FRONTEX must be ready to assist Member States in circumstances requiring increased technical and operational assistance at external borders, especially at external Union borders which are vulnerable or require concerted action.

Motion for a resolution on the situation in Syria, Yemen and Bahrain in the context of the situation in the Arab world and North Africa

E-mail Print PDF

Thursday, 7 July 2011 - Strasbourg

Explanations of vote:

Pino Arlacchi (S&D ), in writing . − I voted for this important resolution because the implementation of significant political and social reforms in the Arab countries is now imperative. In Syria the escalation of brutal repression against peaceful protesters has to stop. With this text we call on the Syrian authorities and President Bashar al-Assad to put an end to the massacre of innocent people and to engage in an immediate and genuine political process in order to contribute to a democratic transition in the country.
